The roads around Haslingfield appear to have been very unsafe places in the 19th century, and the ‘Cambridge Chronicle’ is filled with largely gruesome reports of fatal accidents. The following are not quite so gruesome, but do illustrate the dangers. There were clearly roadhogs around at the time. In August 1825, the Haslingfield carrier, who delivered post to and from Cambridge, was fined £2 for driving on the wrong side of the road “and thereby obstructing the gig of F.C. Knowles, Esq.” He seems to have exacerbated the situation somewhat by throwing stones at Mr. Knowles, for which he was fined another £1 which was “paid … to the treasurer of Addenbrooke’s Hospital”, an untapped source of income perhaps for today’s NHS. New members always welcome for a fun evening of dancing, a bit like a barn dance. We usually meet on Tuesdays between 8pm and 10pm every month (except July and August) at either Haslingfield or Harston Village Hall. It costs just £1 per evening.
It doesn’t matter if you have never done it before, our expert callers stand on the stage and tell us all what to do. New members are always welcome, and you do not need to live in the villages. You do not need to bring a partner. We just come to have fun – we do not take “getting it right” very seriously.

Support our outreach work in Cambridgeshire’s villages and towns. How we receive our television signal is changing. At the end of March 2011, the current analogue signal will be turned off and replaced with a digital signal that you will need special equipment to receive. The national “Switchover Help Scheme” has been well-publicised but there will still be many people who do not understand what Switchover is about and these are likely to be the most vulnerable people in our communities. Between the 18th October at 10.20pm and the 19th October at 6.30am, a property in New Road, Haslingfield was broken into. Unknown offender(s) have entered the premises through a garage door and have then got into the actual property possibly though an insecure internal door. A search was carried out on the ground floor of the property and numerous electrical items, cash and some personal items have been stolen. Read more

‘The Haslingfield Chronicle 1776-1900’ is a collection of newspaper articles printed in the ‘Cambridge Chronicle’ relating to the village, and the Village Society is hoping to arrange a reprint sometime in the future. One of the items regularly reported is unexplained death. Read more
For thirty-nine years, Margaret Houghton, who sadly died this June, was the inspiration and power house behind Haslingfield Choir and Orchestra, directing two concerts a year in All Saints Church. Now, the choir and orchestra are celebrating her achievement with a concert in All Saints Church on Saturday, October 16th at 7.30 pm.

On the 1st September between 12.30am and 5.50am, a property on Church Street, Haslingfield was broken into. Unknown offender(s) have entered the property either through the front or back door and have stolen high value electrical items, such as a laptop and television, along with cash and mobile phones.

On Tuesday 19 October at 8.00 p.m. in the Village Hall, Dr. Martin Roach will talk about this vital issue. He will review energy consumption in the average home, with ideas on how to reduce our usage. The talk has been organised by the Village Society – everyone is welcome to attend.
Playwright, producer and actor Nick Warburtonwill be guest speaker at the Haslingfield Village Society on Tuesday, 16 November. Nick will relate how he began writing plays for the radio, many of which you may have heard on BBC broadcasts. It promises to be a very interesting evening about what goes into the entertainment we enjoy. Everyone is very welcome to the Village Society talks.
