Wicken Fen, Past, Present and Future

Dr Peter Green will give an overview of the creation of the Fen and the various drainage schemes.  He will then detail how Wicken was one of the few small areas to escape drainage thanks, in part, to the efforts of scientists from Cambridge.  Once the National Trust was formed it bought part of Wicken Fen and was donated much more by these same Cambridge Scientists.  The talk will then detail how the National Trust has maintained the Fen and the reasons for, and progress, of the Wicken Fen Vision, a 100 year project to ensure the long term preservation of this extremely important ecosystem.

Wild West Villages Group Meeting

We are a group of people interested in the environment, wildlife, sustainability and getting families out in nature. We came together after the screening of ‘wetheuncivilised’ in February and are still in the process of talking about what things we’d like to do, but on the table are talks about the Transition movement and sustainable shopping, more film screenings, recycled art projects, a repair café and, on the 21st of April, a families walk to the wild spaces in Haslingfield.

Our next meeting will take place on 10 April at 7.30 in the Little Rose pub lounge bar. If you are interested in any of the things mentioned above, and live in Haslingfield, Harlton, Barrington or Harston, please come along.

  • Home-made curries are back:  Veg and Vegan most days.
  • The shop now offers Barkers Butcher’s meat;  also fresh fish every day.
  • Drink now includes BREWBOARD ALE from the local brewery in Harston.
  • Topat and Bhati have bought the post office and shop at Barrington.  

History of Haslingfield Village Hall (part V)

The new hall was built by local building firm Mills and Douglas and opened in 1993. The Haslingfield Little Theatre established themselves quickly as one of the main users of the hall and performed their plays using a temporary stage which was assembled and disassembled twice a year.

The Haslingfield Little Theatre managed to raise a significant amount of money including a significant County Council grant to allow them to extend the hall in 2001 and to have a permanent stage in the hall as we can see today. (This cost ~£63k)
Since then we have seen many impressive performances from the Haslingfield Little Theatre who seem to be going from strength to strength and the hall is used every week by over a dozen of regular user groups in addition to many other casual users.
Many improvements have been brought to the village hall which have included new chairs, updated toilets facilities including a new flooring and new automatic lights. New tiling and showers in the changing rooms.(TBC)

Next Film Club Meeting

Film based on a true story of women and the space race.  We shall meet on Friday 9th March at 7.30pm in Haslingfield Methodist Church Rooms.  Admission is free.  Running time 121 min. Amber MET Office weather warnings – possible bin service disruption advance warning

The MET Office has issued a severe weather warning for possible snow this evening and for the next two days.

Some information has been posted on our website here to let people know in advance that blue and black bins will be prioritised over green if the crews are not able to complete all the rounds.

Additionally, more information will be posted on www.scambs.gov.uk/bin-collection-service-announcements when the team are aware how the weather is impacting them.
