The Haslingfield Village Society’s season begins with a talk on the work of the Woodland Trust in Haslingfield Village Hall on Tuesday, 17 September at 8:00pm. If you go down in the woods today……. you are sure to enjoy it, most likely thanks to the Woodland Trust. Cambridgeshire is the least wooded county in England and the Trust is fighting to save the ancient woodland we have. With more and more species under threat, its work is of great importance.
This is a whole village society, everyone is very welcome. A small charge for visitors, members free.
We left Eliza Goode working in service at the household of a wealthy London family in the 1880s. There she met Charles Robertson, a joiner, and they decided to get married back in Haslingfield, in 1886.
They would probably have travelled third class from Clapham Junction via Liverpool Street to Harston, where they would have walked the remaining two miles to the village. Living in the village were her parents, in a house in Rotten Row with sister Elizabeth, brother Frederick and uncle Deves. Uncle Thomas worked land off Cantelupe Road.
The marriage took place on 6th September, 1886. Elizabeth and brother William acted as witnesses at a ceremony conducted by the Reverend Clements.
HASLINGFIELD WALKS IN THE STEPS OF ITS MISSIONARY BISHOP…
All Saints’ Haslingfield has a fine memorial window to its missionary Bishop, Charles Mackenzie, who prior to his going out to Africa to help combat the slave trade and to help establish the church in what is now Malawi, walked out from Cambridge to Haslingfield on Sundays to help with services in the church. The full story of his life can be found in the display inside the church, but there is now a link between Haslingfield and Magomero, the place where he established a base in 1861. The Church in Haslingfield together with other parishes in the Mare Way Group has helped with renovation of the school buildings, and most recently with materials for the construction of a church building, which is nearly complete. For all you Haslingfield residents, there were two break-ins to garages on the High Street late on Tuesday 16th July to early on 17th July when bicycles and a motor bike were taken – if you noticed anything please contact the police.
Haslingfield Tennis Club held its annual Mixed Doubles tournament recently. Six teams competed in perfect tennis weather. The winners this year were Chris Chambers and Maria McElroy, who beat Alex Hopkins and Alix Robinson in the final. Congratulations to Chris and Maria, and everyone who took part. Read more
We are delighted to report some new bus stop signs and some timetables have been installed by Stagecoach. Not only in Haslingfield but along the route of the No. 27.
This demonstrates a certain degree of commitment to maintaining the service and who knows it might even improve!
On Friday 12 July from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm the Annual Strawberry Fayre will take place at Haslingfield Methodist Church. The proceeds will go to Home Start, Little Owls and the Methodist Church. Read more
