As reported a few weeks ago by the helpthehareandhounds committee, we have raised sufficient funds to buy the pub. We expect exchange of contracts to take place either in July or August, completion in August or September and we hope to open the pub sometime in September or October. We have interviewed a number of potential tenants and we now have preferred candidates. We cannot sign a tenancy agreement until the property transaction is complete.
The Steering Group is very optimistic and positive on all fronts. Matters are taking a little longer than we had originally hoped, but we see this as a short pause in the long history and prosperous future of our Harlton village pub.
The A14 mobile visitor centre coming to Harston on Wednesday 12 July, between 6 and 8pm. This is an opportunity to see what progress has been made. There will be staff on hand to answer your questions about traffic management, scheme progress and explain timescales etc. for the work. It will be in the car park at the recreation ground, the Limes, Harston CB22 7QT
These are a series of articles which give more insight into the history of the Haslingfield Village Hall aka Pavilion and the recreating ground around it.
Before we start with the village hall we need to have a look at the recreation ground on which the hall was built. This ground was given as a legacy by Mr. Henry Badcock, who died on October 10th, 1921. He was a local Victorian figure, a reserved, kind man who farmed land at the bottom of Barrington Hill. He left some of his money in the hands of trustees with verbal instructions that the money was to be used for the specific purpose to buy a small piece of land which was to be used as a recreation ground for all the villagers to use.
The field that was purchased was running along river lane and was separated from another field by a long hedge running along its edge. This field was owned by the Chivers family, who gave it to the village on the condition that the two fields were made into one and used as a recreation ground in perpetuity. This is more or less the size and location of the current recreation ground.
On Sunday 3 September between 2.00 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. you will be able to enjoy a traditional cream tea with freshly-baked scones, jam and cream, in the informal woodland garden of The Dovecote 29 High Street, Haslingfield. All proceeds to Parkinson’s UK.
On Monday 17 July, we will be holding the Read-through for Lionel Bart’s musical, Oliver! This will be followed by Open Auditions on Thursday 20 July. Both will take place at Haslingfield Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The next Pop-Up Coffee Shop at the Methodist Church is Tuesday 11th July 8:45 – 11:30am and we are raising funds with “Home-Start Royston and South Cambs”, a family support charity . Come along for fairtrade tea, coffee, cakes and pastries. Why not pop-in for breakfast after the school run?
Do you have a charity you like to support? We can work together to raise funds (average is £150) and awareness. We supply the tea, coffee and some of the cakes and a helper or two. You supply cakes and some helpers. We are looking for charities to support on 12th December and 13th February and onwards, always on the 2nd Tuesday/month. 9

Haslingfield Kings and Queens Chess Club.
For children aged 6-13: drop in to play chess in Haslingfield Methodist Church at 5.00pm on July 6th, 20th and 30th . £2 per session.
From September the club will meet in the school on Thursdays at 5.00pm, during term time.
The Village Shop and Post Office on Fountain Lane is now selling authentic home made Indian Curry. The type of curry changes each week and therefore the price changes accordingly. It costs between £5-£10. Seriously good local curry!
This Friday 30th June sees the next Little Rose Pub Quiz, which takes place on the last Friday of every month. Teams of any number, up to a maximum of six, can take part. Cost of entry is only £10 per team with all the entry fees given out as cash prizes. First Question asked at 8pm. Just turn up on the night or book in advance. We can also make up teams from whoever turns up on the night. The quiz now takes place on the last Friday of every month. It’s great fun with a good number of all local teams taking part. There’s 6 rounds covering many topics including a topical quiz round as well as a picture round. The quiz finishes around 10pm with a break halfway through.
