Secure your shed or garage. Take a look at your shed and consider how you would break in. It’s worth having a good padlock on the door with no exposed screws. Pay attention to hinges, as these are sometimes easily removable. If you have windows then these could be vulnerable unless they’re secured with wire mesh or grills. And keep it locked at all times. Consider a battery-operated shed alarm. They look low key but they respond to movement or door contact with an extremely loud siren.
Don’t give burglars the opportunity or the tools to commit a crime. Lock everything away securely. Tools can be locked inside a locker or box or secured with a chain. Secure your bike to the ground or a lockable stand within a locked shed or garage. It’s always worth draping an old sheet or blanket over the top of mowers or bikes to keep them covered from view. Invest in a garage door stop. Although it might sound like stating the obvious, never leave your garage or shed door unlocked if you’re not around.

Police are urging trick-or-treaters to respect their neighbours. While many are happy to hand over sweets or other presents to ward off the evil spirits, it’s important to remember not everybody wants strangers knocking on their doors. For vulnerable or older residents Halloween can be a frightening and intimidating experience. Police have a downloadable poster you can display in your home asking trick-or-treaters NOT to call, as well as some tips for the trick-or-treaters to ensure everyone has a pleasant evening. To download copy of poster and see the tips visit https://www.cambs.police.uk/A-Z/Halloween. Copies also available for collection at police stations.

Beware scam calls by a bogus company calling themselves Crime Awareness UK, they offer to make a visit to your home to do security checks and install alarms. Part of the scam is they offer you a crime reference number and pressure you to allow them to visit your home. Cold callers like this are invariably up to no good. Do not give out any personal information about your home or yourself, and do not arrange a visit. Stop the call and report it to Action Fraud immediately on 0300 123 2040.

By taking simple preventative measures you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary:- ALARMS: One of the most effective deterrents is to install a burglar alarm. Ensure it is set every time you leave the house. SECURE ENTRY POINTS: Don’t leave any windows or doors unlocked or ajar as these can be easy access points for a burglar. IF YOU ARE GOING AWAY: make your home look lived in, ask your neighbours to keep an eye out and install timer lights. You are at much less risk of being the next victim if burglars think you are at home.
