At the moment, a village pub like the Little Rose, can be demolished or changed into a shop or office without having to get planning permission to do this. South Cambridgeshire District Council is currently seeking views concerning the proposed use of something called Article 4 directions which could be used to prevent this and therefore help retain village pubs. It’s something that the Little Rose Support Group has explored and supports, as does the Campaign for Real Ale (CamRA). Con and Carol and everyone at the shop wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Our turkeys will come from Black Barn Turkeys at Meldreth, and can be free range bronze, free range or barn. Turkey crown, butterfly or rolls can also be ordered, as well as hams, gammons, sausage meat and chipolatas. Happy Christmas!
The Village Post Office is now designated as a “Community Office” after a long and hard fight. This means that it remains worthwhile to run. It is therefore hard for the shop to now appeal to the village to use it. Please come in and have a look round. The shop is not expensive and it carries lots of bargain lines. In a price comparison against Tesco’s website of 15 items last year, the shop was a little bit cheaper overall. It is a continual struggle to make ends meet. If the shop doesn’t have what you’re looking for, then ask and they’ll try to order it for you. The future of the post office and shop are intertwined, one can’t exist without the other. Country Kitchen is hosting 2 supper events, following on from our previous ‘Steak & Honour’ burger night which was a great success.
We are delighted to have Steak & Honour join us again on Thursday 24th July, 4.30-8pm. They will be serving proper burgers made with local produce and a vegetarian option is also available; so please look out for their famous bright red Citroen H van. And there’s a rumour that we will have a local jazz quartet to listen to while we all queue up….
Then on the 14 August, we’re doing something similar with ‘Fired up Pizza’ who serve wood fired pizza out of their airstream caravan. They fire their oven with ‘hotlogs’ from Cambridge Woodworks at Penn Farm Studios, so everyone is doing their bit for sustainability!
Christmas seems to have passed by with the blink of an eye. At Country Kitchen we had a very, very busy festive period taking turkey orders, selling our unique hampers that were stuffed full of exciting goodies, homemade Christmas puddings flew off the shelf, weird and wonderful cheeses filled the deli counter and even our famous sausage rolls had a festive twist! So thank you all for your custom over the Christmas period. Read more
With a shock today Country Kitchen realised that the ‘use by’ date on milk was in December. That definitely means Christmas can’t be far away! Which, of course, brings us to the big ‘T’… Turkey… If you’ve bought your turkey from Knibbs in the past, you’ll have had a ‘Black Barn turkey’, based in Meldreth. This is also the same supplier we’ve been using for turkey escalopes. We’re now taking turkey orders for Black Barn turkeys ranging from 3 – 9 kgs – both barn reared hens (£6.50 / kg) and Bronze free range turkeys (£10.50/kg). Other turkey options such as crowns, saddles, butterfly breasts and turkey rolls are available as well (and prices are the same as Waitrose). Read more
I would like to quash any rumours that I will be swapping my dazzling career as a shopkeeper for the dizzy heights and fiscally more rewarding charms of Hollywood stardom, after my left hand and three digits of the right starred opposite Neil Morrissey for the forthcoming film ‘Caffiend’ (though the cameraman assured me that a ‘full frontal’ shot would be used – a dubious honour!)Read more
From this Sunday, Country Kitchen are going to open from 10:30 until 14:00. This could work quite well because the other shop is open early and closes early as well, so this should cover a few more hours on a Sunday between both shops. Keep an eye out for the xmas display area coming (too?) soon!
Country Kitchen has now been trading for six months and we’re still honing our product lines and growing our customer base. But one thing we do know for sure is that our best seller by a million miles are our sausage rolls, which we make on-site, followed closely by pies and then our quiches and other food cooked on-site. Have you got masses of apples and at a loss as to what to do with them? Bring them along to Country Kitchen on Saturday the 5th October from 10h00 – 13h00. We’ll pulp them and press them (you and the kids can join in too!), and all you have to do is collect lovely, fresh apple juice to take home and enjoy. Please remember to bring your own containers in which to collect the juice!
It’s good to report that recent concerns about potential closure of the local post office have gone away for the time being. A Village Resident wrote about the problem to MP Andrew Lansley and this is the gist of his reply. “I am writing to advise that further to my letter dated 7th June, I have now received a response from the Post Office Ltd to the enquiry I made on your behalf regarding any changes to Haslingfield Post Office. The Post Office have advised that they are not currently aware of any plans to change the way that Haslingfield Post Office is operated. They have offered their assurances that the local community would be notified if there were any plans to change this. Post Office Ltd have also informed me that changes through the national three year investment programme are being implemented on a voluntary basis and consequently, no subpostmaster would be forced to convert to a new operating model unless they wished to do so”. Many thanks to ‘Village Resident’
