Michael was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps in 1957. He volunteered for service with the Brigade of Gurkhas the following year; subsequently serving with them for over 12 years in the Far East, Cyprus and the UK. He is a founder member the Gurkha Army Service Corps, a new Brigade of Gurkhas unit.
Michael Thorp has been involved with the Gurkha Welfare Trust for 35 years and is the past Chairman of the East Anglian South Branch of the Trust.
