Linton won the toss and chose to bat making a slow start being 20-2 after 10; increasing steadily to 73-3 by drinks thanks to a 59 partnership from Ajay and Wilson. They were pegged back by two quick wickets after the restart, but then a 92 fifth wicket partnership from their debutante Wadrup (57*) and Bowie was essential for the home team to post 188-7. Only Lee mana…ged to stem the flow of runs (18-0), with three wickets for Jack, two for Nick and one for Ash.
Our innings started badly with Ash going in the first over and after a bright interlude from Lee and Clive we’d lost three more wickets by the tenth over. So although we were well ahead of the run rate at 42-4, three of our batsmen had departed for a total of 1 run – the writing was on the wall. A ray of hope was provided by a fifth wicket partnership of 58 from Nick and Clive, but losing Clive (48) shortly before drinks (I hope you didn’t get into too much trouble being late to the wedding) was the beginning of the end. At twenty overs we were still well ahead of the run rate (105-5) but a combination of slow scoring (decent bowling from Anil) and the regular loss of wickets meant that half-way through the thirty-first over we were all out for 128.
Bright spots were few and far between – good fielding from newcomer Dave, a high catch from Fin! some delightful late cuts from Clive, straight drives from Nick, a very powerful no-ball six over long leg from Lee and a nice cameo of young Josh’s skills. But all-in-all it is a bit of a downer after another of those too common “if only” matches. No beers for the boys tonight – we’re still in the drop zone, but Royston lost to Barrington.

Looking back to the 70’s and 80’s playing in CCA Junior 1was often challenging.
Not least due to some opponents having Senior backgrounds. We did surprise
some, and always had 11 players.
At that time Haslingfield CC won a monthly CCA best performance award for Junior
league, sponsored by Marshall Motor Group. Does the shield still exist?
Local press and radio gave CCA plenty of coverage.
The village club would put on special matches and functions such as playing a
Cambridge United XI to raise a donation for the Meldreth Manor School.
First class county teams were entertained at The Little Rose as part of a player’s testimonial year.
Being a member of the CCA’s council, and club secretary I was kept busy with cricket!
Not to mention the club, at the time, providing regular cutting of the Rec.
Good luck to HCC for the remainder of the seson; hoping it avoids the drop.
