Should South Cambs Help Save Village Pubs?
At the moment, a village pub like the Little Rose, can be demolished or changed into a shop or office without having to get planning permission to do this. South Cambridgeshire District Council is currently seeking views concerning the proposed use of something called Article 4 directions which could be used to prevent this and therefore help retain village pubs. It’s something that the Little Rose Support Group has explored and supports, as does the Campaign for Real Ale (CamRA). Article 4 directions could be used to withdraw the permitted development rights which currently allow the conversion of village pubs like the Little Rose to other uses such as retail (a shop) or offices, or for the pub to be demolished. An article 4 direction does not prevent the development but does require planning permission for the development to be obtained first.

The council is trying to encourage as broad a response to this consultation as possible so do take part. The Little Rose also has blank forms for you to fill in and they’re collecting them to send them in. Or you can print them off and post the completed forms to:-

The consultation is currently open and closes midnight 23 February 2015.
The results will be considered by the Economic Development Portfolio Holder and ultimately the Planning Committee, who must determine whether this approach should be adopted as council policy.
