About Haslingfield Choir
Haslingfield Choir was founded in 1971 by Margaret Houghton who, after nearly 40 years of service to the choir, was awarded an MBE for her services to choral music in Cambridgeshire in 2010.
Since September 2011 the choir has been under the musical direction of Graham Walker and now numbers around 60 members. Rehearsals with our accompanist Maurice Hodges are held on Tuesday evenings in Haslingfield Methodist Church during the Autumn and Spring Terms. The two concerts each year (both held in All Saints’ Church) take place in early December and late March or early April.
We perform a varied repertoire of choral works. Recent Concerts have included Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Finzi’s In Terra Pax, Duruflé’s Requiem, John Rutter’s Gloria and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. In most concerts the choir is accompanied by an orchestra which is assembled from a regular nucleus of players under leader Frances Poole. Soloists are often current or former choral scholars from the University of Cambridge. Occasionally the choir performs a work such as Honegger’s Christmas Cantata, which includes a children’s chorus drawn from the local village school.
The choir has a wide age-range, from teenagers through to the retired. The mid-rehearsal coffee break gives the opportunity for sopranos, basses, altos & tenors to mingle.
Haslingfield Choir is a registered charity No. 284505, and is affiliated to Making Music.
