    • Haslingfield Choir
It is with great regret we announce that Margaret Houghton the musical director died of cancer on 22nd June 2010. A memorial concert on 16th October was conducted by Martin Ennis. 19th October 2010 ************* At the start of 1971, a couple of dozen singers, mostly from the village, got together to rehearse and perform Handel’s Acis & Galatea in the school hall. The soloists were drawn from the choir, a small orchestra was assembled, and a harpsichord was hired. This was the start of Haslingfield Choir which has given two concerts a year ever since (and on just one occasion three). The choir has to date given 78 concerts, all but two conducted by Margaret Houghton, the founder of the choir. Haslingfield Choir now numbers around 55 members. Of these just under half live in the village, and the others come from nearby villages or from Cambridge. We perform a varied repertoire of choral works. Recent concerts have included Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Finzi’s In Terra Pax, Parts 5 & 6 of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, John Rutter’s Gloria and Haydn’s Paukenmesse. Most concerts are with orchestra, but the performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle was accompanied by piano and harmonium. Rehearsals, with our accompanist Maurice Hodges, are held on…

Until recently the Little Rose was not in good shape but the thorn in Haslingfield’s side is no longer!  The Little Rose was taken over by Ricky and Niki Turner in February 2010 and since then it has rapidly bloomed into the new Rose that it now is! Ricky and Niki came to Haslingfield from the Newmarket area where Ricky was a HGV driver and Niki a PA with Cobham Defense Group.   Prior to that,  the couple ran The Crown in Burwell for four years during which time they were voted Best New Licensees in the East of England by Greene King for their hard work and dedication in turning the Crown from a down trodden pub  into the thriving success that they handed back to Greene King in 2006. The Little Rose was completely renovated during 2010, including a brand new kitchen,  and is now a pleasure to visit.  The fresh surroundings compliment the good atmosphere alongside some fine ales, excellent beers and wines, all served up with lashings of good cheer.   At last the Little Rose  is a village pub that Haslingfield can be proud of;  200 people  turned up to the official re-opening! The Pub is now serving food six days a week.  It’s…
    • Village Society
The Society aims to stimulate interest in and maintain the historic character of the village and to develop and improve its amenities and environment.   A feeling of community is fostered by arranging informative open meetings, normally on the third Tuesday of each month at 8.00 p.m. in the Village Centre, on a wide range of subjects of local and general interest.  In addition there are purely social get-togethers such as theatre trips and wine tasting evenings.  The Society  takes part in the biennial Village Festival and is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive Village Archive, the contents of which are exhibited from time to time and put on display at the Old Bakehouse on Well House Meadow once a month in the summer . The Society hs published eight booklets describing the history, buildings and landscape of the village.   These may be seen at the regular meetings and some may be purchased there or from John Beresford. ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH, HASLINGFIELD Grid ref: TL4052 Consecrated on Thursday 15 November 1352 by Thomas de Insula, Bishop of Ely, this Church has remained almost unaltered in external appearance ever since.   For over 600 years it has been a place of regular worship except during the victorian restoration of 1875-1878, when services were held in the school.   During this period, the Camden Society recommended a number of  alterations:  The nave to be re-roofed for the third time; the vestry to be built; the organ moved from the tower; the floor of the chancel to be raised so that there would be seven steps from the nave to the altar(one has been removed in recent times); the east wall of the chancel to be rebuilt for the second time; the three decker pulpit to be modified into the form it is now; the font to be moved to its present position; new pews to be made from parts of the old ones and finally the rood screen to be removed.   Unfortunately a beam across the chancel was removed at the same time causing its walls to bulge outwards in subsequent years.   This was rectified in 1984 by…
