Next Village Society Talk – “The Naked Scientists”

The Naked Scientists are a team of scientists, doctors and communicators whose passion is to help the general public to understand and engage with the worlds of science, technology and medicine. Chris Smith, a medical consultant specialising in clinical microbiology and virology at Cambridge University and its teaching hospital, Addenbrooke’s, laid the foundations for the Naked Scientists radio show, podcast and website back in 1999. He currently co-presents the Naked Scientists and has published 4 popular science books internationally. He lives just outside Cambridge with his wife, Sarah, who is a local GP.   Tuesday, 17th October. The Village Hall. 8 PM. All welcome.  Members and youngsters 16 and under free.   Visitors £2.50.

CHURCH FETE A WINNER

The annual Church Fete was held this year on Saturday 16th of September and was a great success in spite of the showers and at times, stormy weather. The heavens really did open during the afternoon; gazebos flapped furiously in the wind and the jousting platform became even more perilous with the added challenge of the rain-soaked beam and sodden dueling batons (actually sacks filled with something squidgy).

Certificate: 12+.  We break for tea, coffee and biscuits, half way through.  ‘Hard of hearing’ subtitles will be used.  Read more

In the Steps of the Bishop

Sponsored walk, 23 September

2017 will be the 9th year in succession when a sponsored walk has been held from the Chapel of Gonville & Caius College in Cambridge to Haslingfield Church to commemorate the walks undertaken by Bishop Charles Mackenzie on Sundays to help with services in Haslingfield.   He later went as a missionary bishop to what is now Malawi and his memorial window may be seen at the east end of the south aisle in the church.
